Oates, Joyce Carol
Joyce Carol Oates was born and raised in western New York and attended Syracuse University. She was an avid reader from an early age and grew up in the controversial age of the Vietnam War both of which influenced her later writings in fiction, plays, short stories and poetry. She has written within many genre including fantasy and science fiction, romance and historical romance, mystery, suspense, thrillers and horror, as well as literary and general fiction. Much of her work involves the themes of poverty, abuse, class tensions, drive for power, and adolescence. She has taught in Texas, Michigan, Canada as well as at Princeton University.

Frederick Scott Oliver was born to Scottish parents near the border with England. He was educated at Edinburg University and Trinity College at Cambridge University. He established himself as a British political writer and businessman and was an advocate for the formation of an imperial union in the British Isles. Many of his books were standards of the day.

Marie Bankhead Owen was born on the Bankhead Plantation in Mississippi shortly after the Civil War. Her grandfather had been in the Revolutionary War and her father fought with the Confederate States of America. She served as the director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History for over 30 years and also as a documentarian for Alabama history.
